Deb King is a handweaver with a deep fascination for the transformation of yarns into cloth and of cloth into garments. She combines designing, weaving, sewing and natural dyeing to create unique pieces to be used and to be treasured.
Her practice is informed by the natural materials she selects and the conversation that develops between the yarns, the loom and her hands and eyes as she works. The individual character of each material is allowed to take centre stage in the final cloth and she is preoccupied by both the appearance and the feel of the fabric she creates, its drape, delicacy or weight. Deb values the subtle lustre and luxury of silk, the comforting softness and body of wool and the crispness of linen and paper.
Deb’s garments and accessories are made with care and attention to detail and are intended to accompany the wearer in their daily life, collecting memories and perhaps scars and repairs until they are returned to the earth at the end of their useful lives.
As her primary interest is in cloth we can use and wear both the design of the cloth and the materials she selects needs to be fit for purpose and should feel good. Deb is passionate about making accessories and clothing we can treasure; committed using natural materials and the desire for longevity and her own aesthetic means that designs are simple and timeless rather than fashion led. Inspiration often comes from the colours, textures, and atmosphere of both natural and urban landscapes.
