Large Rhythm Waves and Small Staccato Sphere
Rhythm is always there. It starts with the making process, the regular squeaking of the wedging bench interspersed with heavy thuds as I mix and wedge the clay, the rhythmical beating of the clay with a wooden plank when shaping the form, and the repeated regular scraping sound of the metal kidney when refining the surface of a piece. Jazz and classical music fill the workshop.
The rhythmical patterns on the surfaces of Large Rhythm Waves and Small Staccato Sphereform the visual counterpoint to the regular and meditative rhythms of Making. These two pieces are a response to a recently visited concert featuring works by Sylvestre Revueltas, Bryce Dessner, and Igor Stravinsky – a total immersion into large rhythm waves and pulsing staccato sounds.
