Ali Holloway
The dying process used for ‘If I could tell you’ involves space-dying skeins of yarn. Ali binds the yarn with string with the dots and dashes of morse code to spell out words the lines of a poem of the same name by W H Auden. In the act of weaving with the yarn, the words become tangled and the message can no longer be read.
'If I could tell you' is part of a sequence of woven pieces which explore the possibilities and impossibilities of communicating through textiles. Messages are encrypted and the desire to communicate is often thwarted.
