Angus Ross
Exquisite, strong and exceptionally comfortable wooden chair with curved and supportive seat, back and arms. Remarkably there are only four components in this chair, using timber exceptionally effectively and efficiently for maximum strength and minimum material waste.
One length of oak is hand-bent by four makers working in unison to create the back-rail, arm-rests and front legs. Another plank of oak is sliced twice and bent into two opposing curves to form the back-rest and arched understructure for the seat in an innovative technique developed by Angus. The visually soft seat flows into a large, angled, exposed, dovetail joint. A simple stretcher supports the seat and joins the front legs. If you examine traditionally made carver chairs they all have many more components and therefore more joints than this chair. The joints are the weakest part of chairs, and strength is important as chairs undergo a lot of stress in a lifetime of use.
