Without musicians and composers there would be no music. The Hildegard Collective continues a personal fascination with portraiture and ceramics through the process of painted maiolica, an ancient technique in which artistic harmony and expression are fused within the glazed surface. Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th century abbess, was considered a patron saint of musicians and writers and one of the first women composers in medieval history.
Only more recently has the true worth and cultural range of female musicians and composers been fully recognised. For the Collective, Hildegard is portrayed on a dish gazing towards her legacy, a collection of portraits of: Fanny Mendelssohn, Lily Boulanger, Meredith Monk, Laurie Anderson, Gabriela Lena Frank, Anna Meredith and Nala Sinephro each of whom have made a unique exceptional contribution to the world of music.
