Celebrating exquisite craftsmanship, Ceramic Art London will showcase a diverse variety of ceramic techniques and forms, from the decorative and delicate to the organic and sculptural. The Exhibition offers a wonderful opportunity to acquire new, museum-quality work from international artists, or to simply browse the latest in contemporary craft. Expect the fair’s biggest iteration yet, featuring the work of 14 Contemporary Applied Arts Makers. The show is accompanied by an exciting programme of talks and workshops.
Long term CAA Maker, David Binns, pursues an intuitive engagement with clay, involving both accident and control. He draws (indirect) inspiration from the contrasting shapes and textures found in contemporary architecture and the natural landscape. Binns’ working practice combines elements of control and spontaneity, exploring how glaze reacts over differing clay bodies and cut and textured surfaces. He has participated in numerous UK and international exhibitions, workshops and symposiums, and is featured in many international collections and publications.
New CAA Maker Lesley Farrell creates ceramic vessel forms using traditional coiling and pinch construction methods. The pieces are double walled, creating the illusion of density, with delicate surface patterns sourced from vintage lace. Lesley explores how traces of the past can be held and recalled through hand-made objects. The process used to transfer the surface pattern relies on the touch of the original fabric, which once removed leaves an impression or ‘afterimage’. The work alludes to the former life of the lace and absence of the persons who owned and made it.
Paul Wearing's practice is inspired by our interconnectedness with nature’s seasons and cycles. His hand-built sculptural vessels are symbolic forms echoing the built environment in which he lives and to contrasting textures resulting from energetic forces of growth and decay which interact, disrupt and transform the sense of order. It is these events that Paul finds resonate within ceramic techniques and processes where such textures can be rendered through reactive glazes. His relationship with ceramic materials is thus profoundly rooted within the challenge of rendering expression through their innate qualities. Paul is another one of CAA's New Makers.
Ceramic Art London runs from the 19th – 21st of April at Kensington Olympia West.
